The Story Behind the Snap
THE SETUP:
I love shooting live concerts any chance I get. This last Thanksgiving Houlie & I along with Toby and the Tmac family headed to spend the holidays with our Dad, our sister Kristen, brother Mark and their families just outside of DC. It just so happen that the Winter Slam Tour had started about a week earlier, and it had a stop in Fairfax VA while we would be out there. To support Toby, we all piled into cars and headed to the show. Soon after the lights went down, I grabbed my camera and headed towards the stage – not to bee seen until the last note was played and the house lights came back on.
THE SHOT:
This shot was taken that night. I was standing in front of the stage in the barricaded alley, squeezed in between the security guards on the most pit. I could could barley see over the stage. I snapped quite a few from that position, but becuase of the rock n roll lighting, I wasn’t sure what I had captured. Timing is everything in a setting like that. That evening when I was going through the 1,000 plus snaps I had taken, this one grapped my attention. I’ve taken a ton of shots that have made print, packaging, etc, but there has only been a few times that I have had a gut feeling like this about a photograph. The first time was when I took the cover shot for Jennifer Knapps “Kansas album.”
THE RESULT:
I had already done a shoot for Toby’s packaging a few weeks earlier to supplement the main shoot that I had styled for. So when we returned to Nashville after the Holiday, I sent this one off to Eddy Boer @ Boerhaus Creative who was the designing the packaging for the “Tonight” album. He confirmed my gut feeling that this shot was one that had to be used. We than sent if off to Toby and the Creative Deptartment at EMI, Toby’s record label, and everyone agreed. It had to make the packaging. The rest is history.
Its very rewarding when you see your shot on a finished project, especially one that you believe in. I wanted to share with you what you see when you open up the deluxe packaging for “Tonight”, TobyMacs latest killa project. Here it is:

See you on the other side of the snap!

Completely awesome!
Love the live Toby shot.
Thank You so much for sharing the story behind the shot… it makes it super special. I am really looking forward to reading other stories… especially the one behind my friend Jen’s pic. You are an amazing artist… it seems to run in the family
Thank You.
Kerri,
Awesome shot. So cool to think we were there seeing this shot live that night.
It was so good to see you that night, it has been way too long.
My oldest is going to the Baltimore show next month with the youth group.
Love your blog and plan to come here often.
